Four Gambiters entered Scarborough with mixed fortunes. In the Open section, Mike Barnes scored 4/5 to share 4th place, losing only to international master David Eggleston. In the Major, Mike Naylor scored 3/5, winning all his 3 games as black, but Drag Sudar slumped to a 1/5 score. On the plus side, we found an excellent local, the Angel on North Street. Mick Harper played almost as badly as Drag by scoring 1.5/5 in the Minor section, in which former club member Tim Kendall came joint 1st with 4.5/5
Early days in the league but Gambit 5 have got off to a terrific start this season with 3 wins and a draw from their first 4 matches. Could this be the season they challenge for promotion? Looking elsewhere, Gambit 2, in spite of already having to use 12 different players, have accumulated 7 points from 5 matches with two large wins over WB 2 and Ashfield 3. After two draws Gambit 1 finally recorded their 1st victory, over Newark 1. Gambit 3 and Gambit 4 have each only played 2 matches so far but have started well with 3 and 2 points respectively.
