Congratulations to Michael Barnes who won the 2014-15 Nottinghamshire County Championship last weekend after scoring 4/5. Mike Naylor, making his debut in the open section, scored 3/5 and Pete Mercs scored 2.5/5. Mike (159) had an excellent draw against Peter (193) who drew with Michael.
In the U155 section, which Central’s Mark Radford won, Drag Sudar and Keith Roper scored 3/5. while John Huthwaite, Mick Harper and Andrew Thompson all scored 2.5/5. Drag beat John and drew with Keith who beat Mick who also lost to John.
In the U125 section, won by University’s Owen Hunt, Ronnie Watson scored 3/5, Ken Heath 2/5 and Maggie Gretton 1/5. Ken Heath and Maggie Gretton drew their game.
Other notable Gambit players’ results included Mick Harper (129) beating Ashfield’s Steve Bak (144) and drawing with Mansfield’s Janos Wagenbach (147), but probably the best performance, apart from Mike’s draw with Pete, was by Andrew Thompson (120) who beat both Steve Bak (144) and Radcliffe and Bingham’s Marcel Taylor (143).
Once again it was highly enjoyable event expertly controlled by West Bridgford’s Robert Richmond in excellent playing conditions and it would be nice to see the event better supported by Notts players. Only twice in the last decade has the event attracted more than 50 players. Yet again Gambit dominated the entries with more than twice as many players as any other club although both Central and Radcliffe & Bingham were well represented, each with 1/3 of their membership.
