2013-14 Review

For the seventh successive season Gambit 1 finished in the top 3 in division one, with Grantham, pulling in players from all over Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, winning for the 5th time in succession. Gambit 1 finished 3rd after disappointingly losing to a relatively weak Ashfield 1 who took 2nd place. Two players remained unbeaten throughout the season: Michael Barnes won 9 and drew 3; John Swain won 4 and drew 9.

Gambit 2 were always destined to struggle in division 1 and finished 8th on 6 points, 3 points short of safety. As always in these circumstances, it’s possible to point to three or four matches that, with a little more luck, Gambit 2 might have won or drawn to stay up. Special mention must go to Marc Subira who, on board 1 against a 192 average, recorded 5 wins, 4 draws and only 2 losses to average 206. Graeme Jennings also did well with a 158 performance v a 169 average.

Gambit 3 finished 5th in division 3, just 3 points off promotion. On board 1 Keith ‘Grinder’ Roper managed 155 v a 168 average. Hamzah Ali, John Huthwaite, Richard Edwards and Gary all scored about 50% and newcomer Mike Naylor had an excellent season with 6 wins, 2 draws and just 1 loss.

Gambit 4 had a yo-yo season, winning then losing then winning then losing etc, and finished midtable with all 5 players’ performances being between 40% and 50%.

Gambit 5 finished 5th in division 5. Alan Groves had a decent season averaging 105.
