12 Gambit members took part, over 25% of the total entry, with Ronnie Watson winning the u110 section and Mick Harper 2nd in the u135. West Bridgford’s Robert Richmond did his usual fine job controlling all 4 sections.
In a very competitive Championship section, West Nottingham’s Alex Posazhennikov fought off a challenge from 4 Gambit members to win the title with Marc Subira, Peter Mercs, Michael Barnes & Steve Hunter coming 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th.
In round 1 WN’s Mark Kenyon, WB’s Brian Thompson & R/B’s Nick London managed to draw with Peter, Mike & Marc respectively. Round 2 was little better with Peter & Mike drawing with Brian & Nick. Marc beat leader Alex in round 3 to set up an exciting Sunday.
Steve drew with Mike in round 4 while Marc could only draw with Dan Broughton leaving 3 players, Alex (3), Marc (3) & Mike (2.5) who could still win the title.
In round 5 Mike and Alex drew. Marc, a pawn up and needing to win, allowed Steve to gain mating threats. Steve then missed a chance to win Marc’s rook and they drew, leaving Alex the winner on the ‘sum of progressive scores’ tiebreak.
